About the Program
WM is committed to providing customers with safe and reliable quality waste services. The Tunica Sanitary Landfill is located in Tunica, Mississipp, where the team buries trash and garbage below secured and stratified layers of dirt and isolating material. The transfer station accepts tire, solid waste, hazardous waste and inert material waste. The conservation objectives at the site include providing forest habitat edges and cavity-nesting sites to increase nesting songbird presence and to replace natural duck cavities lost as a result of relocating the Lost Bayou wetland.

Practices and Impacts
  • The WM team monitors the forest habitat for tree survivability, using the data to determine whether follow-up plantings are required.
  • Initially, 13 small bird cavity-nesting boxes were placed on-site. In 2023, the usage of the boxes exceeded the utilization rate triggering more boxes to be placed on-site. However, most usage was from sparrows (primarily house sparrows). Therefore, the new boxes added were sparrow-resistant bluebird houses. Ten new bluebird boxes were added to the boundary posts and placed along the forest corridor.
  • Eight cavity-nesting duck boxes have been added to the site; six were placed on the landfill site, and two were sited at an off-site wetland mitigation area. Each nesting box support was also equipped with a predator guard.
