Grupo México
Rehabilitación de Lobo mexicano
Cananea, Sonora, México, Sonora, Mexico
Certified through 2024
Grupo México Mineria participates in a rehabilitation and reintroduction program for Mexican gray wolves on approximately 7.5 acres of enclosed land in Sonora, México. The Mexican wolf was exterminated in the wild around 1970 as a result of eradication campaigns carried out by the governments of the United States and Mexico to respond to the livestock conflict of losses due to predation. In 1976, the Mexican gray wolf was included in the Endangered Species Act, which gave full protection to the species and initiated a recovery effort to reach a genetically healthy and numerous captive population and a wild population of 100 Mexican wolves in the range of their historical distribution. Since 2013, Grupo México has participated with Mexican partners and U.S. authorities as a pre-release site for the species in Mexico.
Practices and Impacts
- The wolves in the program receive feeding and veterinary care in addition to gradual behavior modification that prepares them for life in the wild. The genetic health of the population is maximized via a breeding program within the framework of the binational Mexican Gray Wolf Conservation Program. Fifty percent of the Mexican wolves that have been released into the wild in Mexico come from the Wildlife Conservation Management Unit (UMA).
