About the Program
Opportunity Ponds, a part of BP, is located in Opportunity, Montana, approximately 100 miles West of Bozeman. This site previously served an active role in smelting, resulting in a large area of zero habitat value and high contamination. However, team members are committed to enhancing the value of habitat on site to benefit native flora and fauna even beyond required remediation levels.

Practices and Impacts
  • The conservation objective of the Opportunity Ponds Invasive Species project is to maintain and preserve native vegetative cover through chemical control of noxious weeds. The project targets common mullein (Varbascum thapus), whitetop (Lepidium Draba) and kochia (Bassia Scoparia), which are considered invasive in the habitat. Treatments were implemented in 2020, 2021 and 2021.
  • BP actively remediated previous contamination beyond levels required by law.
  • Team members monitor the habitats on-site for use by native avian species.
  • Mammal species are managed through sustainable hunting, and the team monitors habitats on-site for use by native mammals, with a specific focus on cervids.
