Certified Silver through 2024
The Waste Management Monarch Landfill facility is located in Broward County, Florida, about 40 miles north of Miami. The landfill is in proximity to the Everglades and Francis S. Taylor Wildlife Management Area. Wetlands, grasslands and forest provide unmanaged habitat that support the landscaped habitat and species projects on-site. The team actively manages and monitors these projects to improve native habitat for wildlife.
Practices and Impacts
- The new 3,500-square-foot landscaped habitat contains native flowering and host plants for pollinator species. The location was chosen for its proximity to other habitats on-site. Planting was completed as a project on Earth Day.
- Five acres are monitored and managed for invasive plant species. The team uses chemical treatments and physical removal methods to reduce invasive plant cover.
- The team partners with the North American Butterfly Association (NABA) to monitor and identify butterfly species on-site. To date, six NABA butterfly counts have occurred with 39 butterfly species observed.
- Four bat houses were installed in 2022 in support of the team’s goal of increasing local bat populations. The bat condos are monitored monthly for activity.
