About the Program
Founded in 1891, CalPortland is a major producer of construction materials, including cement, concrete, aggregates and other concrete products. The El Segundo Concrete Ready-Mix Plant, located in California near the Los Angeles International Airport, operates in an area surrounded by an active manufacturing and technology industry, neighborhoods and a railroad line. CalPortland is actively engaged in biodiversity conservation at the El Segundo plant with a team dedicated to managing native plants in compact urban spaces. They started with a landscaped habitat covering 2,300 square feet to increase local biodiversity and act as a resource for pollinators.
Practices and Impacts
- February 2022, the project has planted a landscaped habitat with 11 plant species, seven native to California like the coast prickly pear, purple sage and desert agave.
- Management activities — such as trimming, seeding, tailored watering and hand weeding — have helped the project achieve its high survival and bloom rate with pollinators like bees, butterflies and birds using the habitat.
