Certified through 2025
The BGE (Baltimore Gas and Electric) White Marsh Training Center project is operated by Exelon Corporation northeast of Baltimore, Maryland. Located near the Bird River and part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, the site is a training site for utility pole and other electrical operations. The site consists of a 19,800-square-foot wetland area. The goal is to properly manage the wetland area to reduce runoff and sedimentation to the Bird River and to promote native fish and plant species growing around the wetland. Additionally, the project team maintains habitat for native osprey to nest.
Practices and Impacts
- The wetland area is maintained by removing sedimentation and invasive plants. Monitoring has seen an increase in native cattails and other aquatic plants since implementation of the wetland area.
- Osprey nest platforms are built and maintained on-site to encourage osprey to nest in safer locations than utility poles. Osprey have been seen using the site and have had several fledglings.
