About the Program
Johnson & Johnson’s Guelph manufacturing plant is located approximately 100 miles west of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The plant is situated in an industrial area, and roads frame the property. The conservation goal of this pollinator project is to maintain a native meadow habitat to provide for pollinators.

Practices and Impacts
  • In 2020, approximately 22 acres of mowed turf were converted to meadow. The team and volunteers planted over 60 native species and used a wildflower seed mix that will provide food and shelter to native pollinators.
  • Multiple habitat needs are addressed within the meadow: Areas of bare ground are left open to allow access for ground nesting bees, a water feature with stones provides landing areas for insects to drink and a brush pile was created for shelter.
  • The team partnered with ecologists to conduct vegetation surveys at least once during the growing season to identify plant species located within the meadow habitat. The surveys use established scientific monitoring protocols. Data collected is used to adaptively manage the project by identifying and managing invasive plant species.
  • At least 11 pollinator species were observed in the meadow during the August monitoring. Over 40 bird species were identified on-site during the two breeding season surveys.
  • Employees at J&J Guelph partnered with environmental consultants and NGO partners to classify the habitat, provide guidance on the project and conduct monitoring.
