About the Program
In Sonora, Mexico, about 15 miles south of Hermosillo, Cemex's Yaqui Plant mines limestone to produce cement materials. The program started in 2022 with two projects to conserve habitat and wildlife. A small desert habitat is restored on-site to bring back some native vegetation that is well-suited to the arid landscape. In addition, the team is starting to monitor and install features to benefit a few mammals that frequent the inactive parts of the facility. These efforts aims to provide natural and locally appropriate habits that offer wildlife safety and refuge.

Practices and Impacts
  • The rehabilitation of the site and monitoring of the species within the quarry supports the propagation of species and restoration of the native habitat of the Hermosillo region.
  • The project team will convert turf grass and weeds into a small desert garden with native plants using the Miyawaki technique.
  • Native plants in the surrounding area were evaluated to identify the most compatible plants.
  • Soil, phenology, climate and availability of native plants were considered in the selection of mesquite, palo verde, brea and agave.
  • The team conducts monitoring of four species of diurnal and nocturnal mammals that use the quarry area.
