The Bruce Site program is operated by Bruce Power in Ontario, Canada, and situated on the eastern side of the Baie du Dore, which is part of Lake Huron. The site covers about 264 acres of wetlands. The aim of the program is to control and remove a non-native plant species, Phragmites australis, which is a large reed grass known for creating dense stands that can be detrimental to native wetland plants and wildlife.
Practices and Impacts
- Bruce Power partnered with the Invasive Phragmites Control Centre (IPCC) and a wetland ecologist who has pioneered phragmites research and control programs in Ontario.
- Fifteen hectacres of phragmites was cut using aquatic machinery to drown the plants in high-density areas. Cane cutters were used to hand cut in low-density areas.
- In partnership with IPCC, Bruce Power provided funding for the Phragmites Education and Outreach Program that was developed to educate members of the community about invasive Phragmites in Baie du Dore and provide the training and tools necessary to allow them to manage for phragmites.
