About the Program
The Alico Quarry a working limestone quarry owned by CEMEX outside of Fort Meyers, Florida. Materials mined at the site (limestone primarily) support the manufacture of cement and other related construction material.  A one-acre strip of land between the quarry and the access road was planted with native flowering plants to improve habitat for local pollinators.

Practices and Impacts
  • Local expertise was used to develop a planting list of native flowering plants that could be used to convert a one-acre strip of turf grass to a more pollinator-friendly habitat.
  • Seeds were planted, but the monitoring was hampered by mowing. Mowing was suspended, and the site is monitored for the presence/absence of native species throughout the growing season.
  • Three bee houses were also placed around the site to provide nesting habitat for local bees. The houses are monitored throughout the season as well.
  • Additional partners are being recruited to improve monitoring protocols.
