About the Program
Mount Vista Park Grassland Project is located within a utility corridor operated by Exelon Corporation and managed for pollinator habitat and native grassland species. The corridor runs through Mount Vista Park, in Kingsville, Maryland. This 100-acre park features walking trails and open fields, adding habitat diversity to the nearby heavily forested Gunpowder River riparian zone that includes multiple state parks and conservation areas. This project is located approximately five miles inland of Chesapeake Bay. The grassland project creates 10.5 acres of grassland habitat that is managed to enhance pollinator habitat while ensuring the safe transport and delivery of electricity.
Practices and Impacts- Encroachment of woody growth is limited to maintain grassland habitat while also ensuring reliable energy delivery
- The team carefully monitors the grassland over time to observe species diversity and pollinator use
- Exelon creates habitat for the endangered monarch butterfly by providing high-quality sources of wildflower nectar and milkweed forage for young caterpillars.
