About the Program
The Hay Road Landfill site, located in Wilmington, Delaware, near the Delaware River includes four landfill cells encompassing 108 acres that have all been covered with vegetative plants. Only native mixtures of seeds were planted on the site to ensure the success of a native habitat. The team manages four acres of grassland habitat that maintains bird boxes and a pollinator garden.

Practices and Impacts
- Four acres of grassland on the site are managed to provide sufficient habitat for native bird species. Annual monitoring occurs to assess the presence of any invasive species. Management activities include annual mowing and chemical treatments to remove invasive species from the site. Numerous wildlife observations have occurred during monitoring activities.
- In the grassland habitat, 11 bird boxes have been installed to support cavity-nesting bird populations. The bird boxes are maintained through annual repairs and cleanings. Annual monitoring occurs to determine use and species presence, as well as nesting success.
- Within the grassland, 0.65 acres is managed to support pollinator species populations. Pollinator plants have been planted within the habitat, and invasives are controlled through herbicide application. Mowing is completed to help the success of the pollinator plant species. Annual monitoring is conducted to assess the success of the native species.
