WM has overseen the nearly 500-acre Chaffee Wildlife Preserve in Erie County, New York, since 1998. The team maintains wildlife corridors through the preservation of mature forests, wetlands and open fields in the Wildlife Preserve as well as in the active landfill. WM's creation of a buffer zone between the active landfill and the nature preserve allows for the enhancement of keystone resources. A series of storm water retention ponds have been created in the landfill and are monitored on a strict schedule. The team also encourages biodiversity through activities such as bird boxes, brush piles, mowing schedules and trail maintenance.
Practices and Impacts
- The team manages and monitors multiple right-of-way grassland habitats and controls for woody growth and controls invasive species.
