Bayer
JARDIN POLINIZADOR VILLAGRAN
VILLAGRAN, Guanajuato, Mexico
Certified through 2024
Villagran is a city in Central Mexico, within the province of Guanajuato, where Bayer operates a maize seed conditioning plant and packages the seeds of commercial brands. Within this facility’s property, Bayer has decided to set aside several parcels of landscape that amount to approximately 1.25 acres in order to create a pollinator garden. The goal of this project is to support pollinator species, including the monarch, with suitable flowering plants and a habitat to use and migrate through.
Practices and Impacts
- Since July 2017, the landscape project has included native species like asclepias curassavica, cosmos bipinnatus, helianthus annuus, tagetes erecta, and Cucurbita argyrosperma.
- The habitat is regularly maintained using methods standard in formal landscapes with the addition of seed recovery for future planting cycles.
- Monthly monitoring provides data about flowering vegetation and pollinator presence, abundance and diversity.
- Efforts have shown an increase in pollinators for 2022 and illustrated that different pollinators prefer certain flowering plants.
- A full-time dedicated staff has supported recent project success.
