About the Program
The BASF Hannibal agricultural chemical production facility is located in Palmyra, Missouri, north of Hannibal and two hours northwest of St. Louis, at the confluence of the South River. BASF established the “Living Acres” initiative, a research-driven effort for monarch butterflies that focuses on protecting monarch habitat and increasing biodiversity. BASF Hannibal dedicated a 5,000-square-foot landscaped garden to aid in its research focused on providing habitat for the monarch butterfly at all life stages on non-crop areas of farmland.

Practices and Impacts
  • Monitoring data is collected monthly on pollinator plants and pollinators.
  • Monarchs are found to use native planted milkweed plants.
  • Mowing is implemented to reduce woody vegetation.
