Stellantis Zaragoza

About the Program
Stellantis, a multinational automobile manufacturer, and its subsidiary Opel operate a facility in the northeastern part of Spain. Outside the city of Zaragoza, this corporation operates five projects focused on protecting species within landscaped habitats. They manage just over four acres of vegetation, natural fences and tree cover. The objectives of Stellantis’ project are to provide natural and native habitats for the benefit of employees’ education and engagement as well as pollinator and lizard species.

Practices and Impacts

• This site contains a natural fence created by trees. The project began in 1990 and provides 2.25 acres of habitat that include three species native to Spain: the European olive, oleander and white poplar. The team monitors the plant health and pollinator presence.
• Another project that was started in 1990 covers half an acre with 17 species, many of which are native including the Spanish fir, true service tree and stone pine.
• Over an acre on the site contains 18 plant species, ten of which are native to the region including rosemary, English lavender and cork oak. Regular monitoring of vegetation identifies the species’ health rating and pollinator presence.
• This team also monitors a project focused on pollinators, including bees, butterflies, dragonflies and ants.
• Additionally, Stellantis monitors one native lizard located on site, the Iberian wall lizard. This project started in 2019 and provides shelter and habitat for the lizards to forage. Regular species monitoring is completed through direct observations and counts.
