About the Program
The Bay Plant Nature Conservation Habitat program area is managed by Marathon Petroleum Corporation in Galveston, Texas. This oil refinery is located in the southeastern portion of Texas along the Gulf Coast. The site contains two different pollinator garden landscaped areas: Butterfly Boulevard, which is 796 square feet; and Learning Lanes, which is 0.23 acres. The conservation objective is to plant and maintain native pollinator gardens to promote native pollinators, bees, birds and other wildlife species. The project also aims to educate employees and the local community on the importance of native habitat and pollinators.

Practices and Impacts
  • Two native pollinator gardens, called "Learning Lanes" and "Butterfly Boulevard," were installed and planted with native pollinator-attractive plants. Both have seen an increase in usage by monarch butterflies, bees and other native pollinators.
  • Native pollinators are monitored in both gardens to try to determine if they are thriving on-site and utilizing this created habitat.
