About the Program
In Panama, CEMEX operates several facilities that produce cement, concrete and other related products. At their Calzada Large plant about 15 miles north of Panama City, they have protected a large forested habitat that expands 296.5 acres. The goal of this program is to reforest five hectares annually to increase vegetation coverage, improve soil health and create a habitat for local wildlife. Their efforts exceed a regulatory requirement to reforest areas affected by quarry mining in that they voluntarily initiate restoration efforts before the extraction life span ends, utilize native species and conduct inventories to enhance reforestation outcomes.
- The project started in mid-2014 and now includes 59 plant species, many of which are native to Panama such as Cordia alliodora (laurel), soursop and West Indian locust.
- Since the last application, the habitat has been expanded by over 25 acres.
- The habitat also boasts a significant wildlife diversity with the recently recorded presence of 71 species including the Túngara frog, banded cat-eyed snake and common basilisk.
