About the Program
BASF, near the Jersey Shore at Toms River, is a remediation site from contamination of soil and groundwater resulting from chemical waste disposal, beginning in the 1950s. The plant closed in 1990. BASF activities includes the creation of a freshwater wetlands complex, restoration of tidal areas, flood plain and wetlands enhancements, creation of upland grasslands and pollinator habitat, and an environmental education center.

Practices and Impacts
- The project team added a new grassland area of 105 acres. Sections previously consisted of former industrial areas including pavement and other impervious cover, which was removed and restored with soil and grassland plantings.
- Prior to implementation, the team conducted soil surveys and testing and evaluated plant species for growth height and bloom period to support pollinator species, while the site remains compatible for solar array development and maintenance.
- Rutgers University conducts monitoring for the rare grasshopper sparrow, with 107 observations in 2022, and inventories vegetation, resulting in 52 of the species observed being native.
