About the Program
The General Motors Fairfax Assembly and Stamping Plant, located in Kansas City, Kansas, produces the mid-size Chevrolet Malibu. The facility has operated since 1987. The plant is situated on 580 acres, of which approximately 150 acres are unused. The Missouri River borders the site to the east and north, with undeveloped land and railroad tracks acting as a buffer. The site is also bordered by commercial and industrial zones to the west and south. Their program has an overall objective to increase the site's ecological diversity and to involve and educate the local community on the need for native plants.

Practices and Impacts
  • The landscaped pollinator habitat is 0.63 acres and was implemented in May 2017. Project team members have observed a good survival rate for the plants, and they have also observed birds such as finches as well as monarch butterflies using their landscaped habitat.
  • The site is monitored throughout the growing season and related pollinators and wildlife are noted.
  • The area is managed using normal landscaping procedures while also limiting pesticide applications.
