About the Program
The General Motors Kokomo Operation is located in Kokomo, Indiana, approximately 60 miles south of Indianapolis. The plant has been in operation for 86 years and was acquired by General Motors in 2009. Situated on 175 acres, the site provides habitat for myriad plants and animals. The team actively manages two pollinator gardens that were planted with native pollinator plant species in 2013 and 2016. They also provide opportunities for local middle school students, staff and the public to learn more about local conservation issues through education events.

Practices and Impacts
- The team educates a middle school class of students on water quality issues by providing hand-on activities in a local stream. In 2021 and 2022, 19 students participated in the event, and data collected about stream water quality was uploaded to Hoosier Riverwatch.
- The team manages two pollinator gardens totaling 1,700 square feet with the goal of increasing pollinator habitat and food availability for insect pollinators. The gardens are weeded, and monitoring of plant survival and insect pollinators is conducted in the summer.
