About the Program
The Regional Municipality of York and The Regional Municipality of Durham’s Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant is located in the Toronto Metro Area in Canada at the confluence of Duffins Creek and Lake Ontario. The site is located adjacent to a costal woodlot of Lake Ontario, the shore of Lake Ontario, Duffins Creek and the Duffins Creek Wetland Complex. Here the team manage 11 acres of grasslands and wetlands for the benefit of migratory birds and other native wildlife.

Practices and Impacts
  • Since 2008, the team has maintained several habitats on-site. A 10-acre grassland is monitored through monthly site visits where animals seen are logged and photographed. Plants are inventoried once every several years.
  • A one-acre wetland is monitored through monthly site visits where animals seen are logged and photographed. Plants are inventoried once every several years.
  • Twenty bird boxes have been installed on-site to to provide cavity nesting locations. The bird boxes are cleaned annually. Eight raptor poles have also been installed. The team conducts monthly site visits where birds seen are noted and photographs from game cameras are logged.
