Buzzi Unicem USA - Cape Girardeau Plant

About the Program
Buzzi Unicem USA is one of the leading cement manufacturing companies in the United States. Its Cape Girardeau production plant facility is located in eastern Missouri, about 100 miles south-southeast of St. Louis and adjacent to the Mississippi River. The site includes a 150-acre lake that is ringed by wooded areas, which act as a buffer from the surrounding farm land.

Practices and Impacts

• Since 2020, the mammal project focuses on supporting habitat for white-tailed deer since 2020. Trail cameras are utilized to monitor white-tailed deer as well as other wildlife. In addition, on-site visitors submit surveys about wildlife sightings, fish caught and animals harvested. 
• The team added native 25 nuttall oak trees, 25 cypress trees and 50 buttonbush shrubs to help increase the quality and quantity of food sources and cover for the deer. 
• In collaboration with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America, Cape Girardeau Public Schools, United Way and Missouri Department of Conservation, Buzzi Unicem USA has started an annual Buzzi Lake Fishing Day event. The second event was held in 2022, during which area youth had the opportunity to learn about the lake's ecosystem as well as learn to fish.
• The project team also began a pollinator garden in 2022 and added some more planting area in 2023 that focuses on using native plants, specifically milkweed, to attract butterflies.
