The Bacardi Bottling Corporation site in Jacksonville, Florida, includes native grassland and wildflower habitats across 22 acres, along with projects targeting the conservation of native pollinator, bird and bat species. The following projects have benefited from ongoing employee engagement and valuable collaborations with local biologists, Duval Audubon Society, Florida Bat Networking Group and Jacksonville Zoo.
Practices and Impacts
- Eight bird boxes across the site provide nesting habitat for the local eastern bluebird population, which has grown each year since installing the boxes. After relocating several boxes and adding predator guards, in the 2019 nesting season, the site's bird boxes housed 43 fledglings. The team also contributes their monitoring data to NestWatch, a national bird monitoring program.
- The team monitors three bat boxes across the site to conserve the native Mexican free-tailed bat, evening bats and tri-colored bats. The boxes provide roosting habitat for these species, and in partnership with local researchers, year-round monitoring activities recorded 2,215 bat calls, including from the target species.
