Practices and Impacts
- The team supports nesting opportunities for tree swallows. In 2018, new nest boxes were added, making a total of 73 managed boxes. More recently, predator guards were added to the boxes to prevent predation by raccoons. Since 2016, nearly 1,000 birds have fledged from the site, and the team has confirmed that banned nestlings are coming back to the location to breed over multiple years.
- In 2018, the team focused their Biodiversity Week on pollinator species. Approximately 300 employees engaged in the event, creating bee habitats and taking home pollinator plant seed packs for their own backyards.
- In 2019, the team ran a morizukuri event during their Biodiversity Week. Morizukuri is a Japanese term for planting trees as plants, resulting in a high density of native trees and shrubs on site. Each of the team members participating planted 35 trees on a prescribed plot during the event.
- In 2020 and 2021, Earth Month was implemented to engage employees to learn about biodiversity. Environmental challenges, trivia and surveys are offered throughout the month of April annually.
