About the Program
COVIA’s Lampazos silica sand processing plant is active in the city of Lampazos de Naranjo in the northern part of Nuevo León, Mexico. Since 2018, team members have monitored vegetation and pollinators on 17 acres of desert habitat and created over 30 acres of landscaped pollinator-friendly habitat. Additionally, educational and monitoring efforts have contributed both to the scientific body of knowledge regarding local, native bees and have also sensitized the community to the important role these pollinators play in their desert ecosystem.

Practices and Impacts
  • COVIA employees and consultants conduct regular monitoring of the vegetation and pollinators within the desert habitat. The team has recorded nearly 100 species of wildflowers and noted a substantial increase in biodiversity since beginning the project. The team also removes invasive species identified during monitoring.
  • The team constructed a bee hotel and garden to provide habitat for pollinators. Over 180 species of native bees have been observed on site representing the families Colletidae, Apidae, Andrenidae, Halictidae, and Megachilidae.
