Certified Silver through 2025
The Cargill World Headquarters is located in suburban Minneapolis, Minnesota, amid a matrix of wetlands, lakes, forest patches and residential neighborhoods. The team at Cargill manages 190 acres for the benefit of local wildlife.
Practices and Impacts
- The team maintains and and monitors 180 acres of forested habitat, featuring mainly native trees and shrubs.
- The forest is surveyed annually by a forester who has been inspecting this property for over 30 years. Surveys note storm damage, pest activity, overall health and wildlife, and adjustments to management are made that include mechanical treatment of invasive species, tree pruning, forest stand thinning and occasional plant health treatments to address pest problems.
- The team at Cargill is also committed to managing 10 acres of landscaped habitat on-site for the benefit of local wildlife. The planting scheme emphasizes native tree and plant species, and landscaped areas are maintained on a weekly basis through mowing, mulching and weeding.
- Invasive species are regularly removed from the habitat to increase plant survival of native species.
- In celebration of Cargill's 150th anniversary in 2013, the team led a planting effort with employees. They planted 150 white pine seedlings in the habitat. These seedlings have grown very steadily, with some reaching 60 inches.
- The program is aligned with the Minnesota Wildlife Action Plan and supports the United States Army Corps of Engineers' conservation efforts in the Upper Mississippi River System.
