BGE Rights-of-Way Environmental Stewardship Program
Baltimore, Maryland, United States
Certified through 2025
The Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) ROW project encompasses approximately 300 acres of transmission line rights-of-way (ROW) near the Chesapeake Bay outside of Baltimore, Maryland. The project is focused on using Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM) techniques to restore and support native grass/shrub plant communities within its managed rights-of-way, including a new right-of-way site added in 2022.
Practices and Impacts
- In 2022, a new 29.6-acre ROW was added to the actively managed grassland habitat at the site. It was chosen for its potential to be suitable habitat for pollinator species.
- The two ROW sites are inspected at least once annually by BGE staff as part of a general compliance inspection and to evaluate the status of the vegetation. Data collected during these visits is used to inform IVM protocols and associated treatments (mowing, herbicide applications).
- Birds and invertebrates are also monitored on an annual basis.
