Charles City County Landfill

About the Program
The Charles City County Landfill is a solid waste management and recycling center operated by WM. This landfill is located in eastern Virginia in Charles City where it sits only 25 miles southeast from Richmond. The site is located between the York River and James River and hosts two acres of wildflower/grassland habitat with bluebird nest boxes, wood duck boxes and bat boxes that all provide habitat and nesting opportunities for native Virginian wildlife.

Practices and Impacts

• Bluebird nesting boxes on-site are monitored weekly during the breeding season and have proven successful in the last two years with bluebirds nesting in two out of the three boxes. 
• The wood duck boxes were inaccessible the past three years due to high water level, so instead, the site has been monitored for wood duck presence with quite a few nesting pairs noted as using tree cavities and other features on-site to breed. 
• Team members monitor the bat boxes monthly, with no evidence of bats since this project began. A small wildflower garden has been added near one of the boxes to provide foraging opportunities, and there are additional discussions about how to attract bats in the future.
