About the Program
Vulcan Materials operates a working quarry in Macon, Georgia. The site contains a 200-acre forest characterized by winterberry, lady fern, mouse-car coreopsis and other grasses, shrubs and trees. Vulcan has converted 10 acres previously used for mining operations into forested area, with the goal of providing a suitable environment that will sustain a wide variety of plant and wildlife. The Vulcan team has constructed nature trails throughout the forest with birdhouses, raptor perches and species awareness signs.

Practices and Impacts
  • The team has constructed 17 bird boxes, two raptor perches and two martin gourd poles with a total of 32 gourds. These bird habitats support local species including bluebirds (Sialia sialis), chickadees (Poecile carolinensis), wrens (Troglodytidae), finches (Fringillidae), killdeer (Charadrius vociferus), brown thrashers (Toxostoma rufum), purple martins (Progne subis) and red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis).
  • The team planted 50 red oak trees on-site in 2019 and will continue yearly monitoring of growth and survival. So far, they have grown with 100% survivorship.
