Vauxhall Motors Ltd. @ Ellesmere Port
Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, United Kingdom
Certified Silver through 2025
The Vauxhall Motors Limited Ellesmere Port plant is located in Cheshire, U.K., south of the Wirral Peninsula. Vauxhall has been manufacturing cars at this plant since 1963. The area around the plant was heavily impacted due to its industrial use and history as an army training ground. Team activities are targeted at increasing biodiversity while educating participating employees. Just over 11 acres of the site are managed to increase biodiversity through removing invasive species from forest habitat, managing sediment in water bodies and providing nesting structures for bird species.
Practices and Impacts
- As part of the avian at Vauxhall project, the team provides nesting, overwintering, shelter and foraging habitat for local birds with the goal of conserving the local native bird species and enhancing their populations. To that end, the team maintains 11 bird boxes on-site and monitors each at least four times each spring.
- Employees regularly participate in monitoring of the nest boxes and performing bird counts across the site. Team members have had repeated sightings of many bird species on-site and increasing numbers of certain species. The peregrine falcon nesting box has been occupied each year since 2008, hatching two to five chicks every year.
