About the Program
In 2016, Vulcan Materials Company voluntarily initiated this project to provide additional nesting habitat and create greater opportunities for successful breeding of wildlife at the Sanger Sand and Rock facility in California. The area consists of approximately 180 acres of preserved native riparian forest next to the Kings River. The following avian species were targeted: tree swallow, house wren, ash-throated flycatcher and western bluebird.

Practices and Impacts
  • In 2016, the project was initiated with the installation of 20 nesting boxes. Two years later, 10 of the original 20 boxes were relocated to areas within the riparian forest.
  • Three additional nesting boxes added in 2021, and six boxes were lowered to provide better access.
  • Since 2020, annual monitoring of the nests has taken place including observations of activity, and nesting success have been documented along with other species of wildlife present in the area.
