WM’s Westside Closed Landfill & Active Transfer Station is located in Fort Worth, Texas, on the west side of the city. The area is bordered on two sides by Mary’s Creek. The closed landfill consists of 325 permitted acres, where the team at WM manages 305 acres of restored grasslands and wetlands for the benefit of native wildlife species.
Practices and Impacts
- In the reclaimed landfill area, employees manage a 13-acre grassland habitat to promote conservation of native plants and wildlife
- The grassland habitat includes four acres managed for food plots provide forage for wild deer and turkey populations, and a two-acre pollinator habitat for bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects
- Wildlife cameras and plant surveys monitor wildlife use of habitat areas.
- A 90-acre pond was created from borrow material and is maintained as a wildlife habitat supporting a wide diversity of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians.
- WM partners with Heroes on the Water and Wounded Warriors Projects to connect veterans with natural areas through environmental education and nature therapy by kayaking and fishing.
