COVIA Planta Jáltipan
Jáltipan de Morelos, Veracruz, Mexico
Certified through 2025
The Covia Planta Jáltipan site is located in the state of Veracruz, Mexico, outside of the city of Jaltipan de Morelos. The project area was used as a mineral extraction site before beginning the restoration process to rehabilitate its native tropical forest ecosystem. The team supports this restoration by planting native species, caring for the plants as they grow and making other improvements to increase the value of the site for wildlife.
Practices and Impacts
- Although restoration was required, the company has exceeded those requirements by planting 30% more native trees.
- Robust monitoring is accomplished through partnership with a scientific institute. Baseline data were collected for plants, wildlife and soil in the project area. The institute conducts comprehensive monitoring of tree health, other vegetation and a variety of wildlife. Monitoring is conducted twice annually in the rainy and dry seasons.
- A nursery was created to produce plants for reforestation on-site and for donations to schools in the community.
- Elementary school children and the community are invited for tours of the nursery, a composting station and the forest. Employees participate in planting trees and taking photos for the WHC Calendar.
