Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center

About the Program
WM's Simi Valley Landfill & Recycling Center regional facility provides safe non-hazardous disposal and recycling services for communities, businesses and industries serving Ventura County, California and adjacent communities. Habitats on-site consist of oak woodland and riparian forest, chaparral grassland, Venturan coastal sage, grassland and pollinator gardens, covering about 181 acres. The site is located in Simi Valley, about two miles northwest of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. The conservation objective is to continue to enhance the native community to provide sufficient habitat for local wildlife.

Practices and Impacts

• Since 2017, five barn owl boxes have provided shelter, roosting, nesting and natural pest control on the site. Annual site audits are conducted to identify any barn owl activity. Community relations specialists visit each owl box, documenting droppings and animal skeletons at the base of the pole to determine if a box is active.
• In 2011, three bat houses were built by local a local Girl Scout troop. They are located in the pollinator garden on the site and are monitored bi-annually for bat activity.
• Fifty-seven acres of tree and shrub habitat are maintained through a restoration project. Maintenance activities include weed abatement, supplemental irrigation, maintaining tree cages and plantings. Monitoring of tree health and survival is conducted annually to ensure the success of the restoration project.
