About the Program
SIBELCO’s Unidade Jaguaruna comprises three active silica sand quarries — Jaboticabeira, Morro Bonito and Olho D’água, located in the southeastern Atlantic coast of Santa Catarina state, in far southern Brazil. The Jaguaruna sites manage over 100 acres comprising a threatened forest type called restinga, a transitional woodland ecosystem between coastal dunes and inland forests. SIBELCO’s conservation efforts in the area are twofold: First is the preservation of intact restinga fragments, and the recovery of restinga impacted by mining activity through monitoring, revegetation and invasive species control. Secondly, SIBELCO conducts community education and outreach efforts that aimed at helping local students understand the various recovery processes, local flora, fauna and ecosystems, as well as to develop a conservation ethic that empowers citizens to be active players in local conservation efforts.

Practices and Impacts
- Since its inception in 2005, SIBELCO’s reforestation efforts in the restinga habitat focus on strategies that maximize plant species and structural diversity, which attracts diverse wildlife and promotes ecological succession. In addition to conservation, the project also aims at recovering environments resulting from ancient mineral extraction excavations, which currently support many amphibians and reptiles.
