About the Program
GlaxoSmithKline's Sherwood Campus, which is located in Richmond, Virginia, focuses on consumer healthcare research and development. The team there currently manages 4.1 acres of landscaped habitat at their site. The team at the Sherwood Campus is committed to managing native plants and wildlife in small urban spaces, while also increasing the environmental awareness and stewardship of both employees and community members.

Practices and Impacts

  • The team manages a number of landscaped gardens throughout their site, including their bee garden, monarch garden and pollinator garden. These garden projects provide habitat needs for a variety of local pollinator species, including food and water sources and shelter. They also serve as an educational tool for employees and the community.
  • The pollinator garden is 1,600 square feet and was installed in 2004 to increase area in the city for pollinators. The project team has observed that the garden is healthy, with minimal issues with invasive species.
  • The bee garden began in 2012 and is 1,000 square feet. The project team specifically wanted to increase habitat for native bees and has observed that the native plant coverage in the garden has increased yearly.
  • The avian project, which began in 2005, focuses on providing nesting boxes for eastern bluebirds. The team's monitoring results indicate that this project is successful, as evidenced by seven bluebird nest attempts with 24 eggs and 17 fledglings, along with two house wren attempts with nine eggs and nine fledglings in 2018. In 2019, there was an increase in fledglings for both bluebirds and house wrens with seven bluebird nest attempts, 30 eggs, and 26 birds that hatched and fledged, and three house wren nest attempts, 16 eggs, and 16 birds that hatched and fledged.
