About the Program
The ExxonMobil Research and Engineering (EMRE) Technology Center lies in a traditionally rural area of Clinton, New Jersey, that has experienced increasing urbanization. The project site is 400 acres with a mix of different land covers. It includes actively farmed fields, grasslands, historically maintained mowed areas and multiple ponds. The program conserves and restores habitat by planting native plants, removing invasive species and adding breeding sites for native species. It also seeks to engage ExxonMobil's employees in active ecological projects and to educate them about habitat and species conservation.

Practices and Impacts

  • The team installed 19 birdhouse for eastern bluebirds, house wrens and tree swallows. These birdhouses provide vital breeding and nesting sites for native birds that have been in decline due primarily to habitat loss. They closely observed the birds nesting and record usage and numbers of fledglings. Only 10 houses were monitored in 2022 due to COVID restrictions.
  • Approximately 13 acres of the site previously managed as turf grass or lawn is being converted into a native grassland for the benefit of grassland fauna and native pollinators. Native plants are being restored and the success of the restoration is monitored over time.
