About the Program
CEMEX’S FEC Quarry is adjacent to the east of the Everglades and Francis S. Taylor Wildlife Management Area in Miami, Florida. The plant produces aggregates, cement and ready-mix concrete. The environmental team created a virtual learning experience to teach Boy Scouts about mining that results in earning a Boy Scout badge.

Practices and Impacts
  • In 2021, the team at CEMEX partnered with the Boy Scouts to host two virtual learning classes so the Scouts could earn a badge for mining and geology. In addition to learning about mining, the school-aged children learned about returning land to benefit wildlife after mining is complete.
  • Learners took an online quiz before and after the virtual session to assess their knowledge. The evaluation of learners showed a 21% increase in knowledge.
  • The project then moved to in-person learning, including an on-site tour and classroom learning on environmental impacts, geology and mining reclamation.
