Planta Ahuazotepec

Introduction
Covia Planta Ahuazotepec is located in Puebla, Mexico. As part of a restoration initiative, the team has maintained 39 acres of native forest in accordance with regulatory requirements since 2005. The area serves as an ecological corridor between Covia's mines and natural forest areas. In addition, the program provides educational opportunities to members of the wildlife work team, plant employees and the general public, and engages the community in reforestation initiatives. The project aligns with national forest conservation plan for biological corridor in the region and a national initiative to train more forestry technician professionals.

Practices and Impacts

• The team performs informal surveys of the flora and fauna throughout the year following the same transects. Over 50 species of native and endemic vegetation have been identified.
• Covia and Instituto Tecnológico Superior de la Sierra Norte de Puebla established a collaborative internship program to provide on-site forest environmental training for university students studying to become forestry professionals. Students conduct flora and fauna monitoring and conduct work on a restoration area, using their experience to contribute to their thesis.
