About the Program
The American Landfill program is located in Waynesburg, Sandy Township, in northeast Ohio. Waynesburg is a rural area 70 miles south of Lake Erie. The site contains a landfill as well as over 10 acres of wetlands that support a diversity of plants and wildlife, such as many native species of birds, amphibians, mammals and reptiles. The wetlands connect to the Indian Run stream and adjacent wooded riparian habitat. Bird boxes including wood ducks nesting boxes have also been added to enhance the project site.

Practices and Impacts
  • To preserve the quality of the wetland habitat, the team regularly monitors and manages the surrounding vegetation with actions such as mowing and pruning, which helps to control non-native plant spread.
  • The site is popular with bird-watchers, who are able to come and observe species, with their sightings and counts submitted to the Cornell University eBird initiative in 2022. The team keeps an inventory of all wildlife observed at the site.
