Hillsboro Landfill and Tualatin Valley Waste Recovery

About the Program
Waste Management (WM) owns the Hillsboro Landfill and Tualatin Valley Waste Recovery site located in Oregon. The site has an ongoing partnership with Jackson Bottoms Wetland Reserve (JBWR) to actively manage the entire property for wildlife. To this end, JBWR monitors the heron rookery, providing WM with the data required to improve the forest habitat for local wildlife. Team members practice environmental stewardship by enhancing habitat for heron and turtle populations and controlling invasive species on site.

Practices and Impacts

• The site manages the property to benefit the heron by monitoring population and addressing habitat and life cycle needs for the species. Surveys show that 113 species of birds have been observed at Hillsboro Landfill since 2017.
• The WM team partners with Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve to manage and reduce invasive populations for the last decade using survey techniques and Early Detection/Rapid Response (EDRR) plans.
• Team members installed logs and tree roots to ponds and the wetland to provide additional habitat for turtles. The species is monitored in collaboration with JBWR yielding an increase in turtle population since 2019.
