Taggart Compressor Station
Six Lakes, Michigan, United States
Certified through 2024
The Taggart Compressor Station program is operated by DTE Energy in Six Lakes, Michigan. Six Lakes is located in central Michigan, approximately 160 miles northwest of Detroit. The site contains seven acres of habitat, which includes three ponds surrounded by native vegetation. In order to support local populations of cavity-nesting native birds, including the eastern bluebird and black-capped chickadee, the team developed a project to provide suitable nest boxes within the habitat to help compensate for the lack of naturally occurring cavities required by these species.
Practices and Impacts
- A total of sixteen nest boxes, built to suit the requirements of the target bird species, are situated around the site in different locations where food and water are readily available for birds.
- Boxes were created with the assistance of a local Girl Scout troop.
- The boxes are checked on a weekly basis by the project team to ensure they have not fallen and to observe if they are being used and by which species of bird.
- Bluebirds have been observed in the area of the boxes, and bluebird fledglings have been observed in one box, as well as several nests and other species.
