About the Program
Covia's Hephzibah Georgia Plant, located in Hephzibah, Georgia, is a nonmetallic mineral mining and quarrying industry producing clay products. The 290-acre site of mixed hardwoods, hayfields and longleaf pines is maintained by regular burning, thinning and species management by the Covia Hunt Club. On-the-ground work for the project began in May 2004. The conservation objectives are to promote eastern bluebirds by installing and maintaining nest boxes, collecting and sharing nesting data, controlling predators from entering or utilizing the nest boxes and promoting the eastern bluebird and songbird conservation through education for employees and public. Employees and partners (St. Michaels Episcopal Church Youth Group, North American Bluebird Society, Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Division) are engaged in project implementation and are engaged in training, box construction and guidance.

Practices and Impacts
- Twelve bluebird boxes with predator guards have been placed around the site in low-traffic areas where the bluebirds can safely nest.
- The boxes were designed according to North American Bluebird Society guidance.
- Most recent data shows approximately 40 bluebirds hatched in 2022, an increase from 2021.
