Bristol Myers Squibb
Lawrenceville Campus Habitat Enhancement Program
Princeton, New Jersey, United States
Certified Silver through 2024
Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) is a global biopharmaceutical company that develops medicines in the areas of cancer, immunology and cardiovascular diseases. The 276-acre Lawrenceville campus is located in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, approximately 10 miles northeast of Trenton. The program manages about 14 acres of grassland and includes nesting boxes and a freshwater pond. The team also runs an engagement and educational campaign, which seeks to offer educational activities that focus on general habitat and species conservation, increase employee awareness to habitat enhancement initiatives and provide new opportunities for project involvement.
Practices and Impacts
- The team plans the Environmental Education Tour and Wildlife Survey (EETWS) activities for the Lawrenceville Campus’s Take Your Child to Work Day, during which children aged 8-14 are invited on-site. For the facility’s Earth Day celebration, the team invites ecologists to give presentations.
- Hands-on experience with nest box monitoring during the EETWS demonstrates to employees how they can take what they have learned beyond the Lawrenceville Campus and manage their own nest boxes at home.
- Information obtained during the EETWS provides an opportunity for BMS to evaluate the effectiveness of ongoing habitat enhancement activities, such as the control of invasive species and habitat management for grassland birds and pollinators.
- On-site education events also feature electrofishing demonstrations and aquatic habitat surveys.
- The team provides information ahead of time for recommended footwear, weather appropriate apparel, use of insect repellant and sunscreen. Field guides and binoculars are provided for participants during the events.
