About the Program
The Savannah River Mill encompasses 1,000 acres of grassland and forest habitat in Georgia. Throughout the 1,000 acres, there are approximately 222 acres of longleaf pine forest. The team has placed nest boxes, designed to provide habitat and encourage nesting of eastern bluebirds, but also benefitting other cavity nesters such as Carolina chickadees, great crested flycatchers and various species of wrens. The main habitat for songbirds found on-site is grassed areas, with ponds and creeks also present.

Practices and Impacts
  • Approximately 28 nest boxes are placed in open, grassland areas. These areas provide desirable forging opportunities for adult birds and their offspring. Boxes are monitored frequently for signs of native cavity-nesting birds, mainly eastern bluebirds, and are maintained or replaced when needed. Monitoring ends around September.
