Downtown Detroit Headquarters Complex

About the Program
The DTE Energy Downtown Detroit Headquarters Complex is adjacent to the Detroit River between Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie. It includes the Navitas House Bioswale project, which is a 6,000-square-foot landscaped area comprised of over 30 native plant species, including drought-tolerant species. The objective of the project is to attract beneficial pollinators, such as bees, monarch butterflies and birds, while simultaneously providing both critical stormwater runoff treatment and retention and an attractive landscaped greenspace in the urban environment for the enjoyment and education of employees and visitors as part of DTE’s “Energize Detroit” initiative. 

Practices and Impacts

• The team uses this site for educational purposes to teach about rain gardens, and stormwater is collected and filtered to help prevent flooding.
• Through selective herbicide treatments and weeding, the team works to eradicate invasive species (e.g. wild carrot and Canada thistle). Presence of 32 species of native plants in 2020 dictates diversity.  
• The site is managed by planting native vegetation to attract pollinators. Many species of birds and butterflies have been observed using the site during the growing season.  
• The drainage pipe from the roof was relocated to correct erosion issues and redirect flow to the middle of the bioswale.  
• Evidence of pollinating numerous species of insects was acquired to demonstrate success at attracting desirable pollinating species; birds are also noted as present. 
• An acre of native trees was planted in 2021 in order to provide wildlife habitat, improve air and water quality and relief from the elements.
