About the Program
Sibelco's Schoolhouse Quartz Plant is located in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, 50 miles northeast of Asheville and within the Appalachian Mountain landscape. The facility mines and manufactures quartz for various uses. The 165-acre contains forest and meadow landscapes along with the North Toe River, all of which support native plants and wildlife. The team manages the site to maintain and restore biodiversity, as well as to engage and educate local students.

Practices and Impacts
  • The team manages 143 acres of grassland for native plant species and high biodiversity. Game cameras are also used to track local wildlife use.
  • The team monitors plant species and soil health of the grasslands annually.
  • In 2022 and 2023, the team hosted local seventh graders for and outdoor education day at the site. Topics included soil health, forest restoration, local wildlife and pollution.
