About the Program
Sibelco is a global material solutions company that mines, processes and sells industrial minerals worldwide. Sibelco’s Red Hill site is in Bakersville, North Carolina, specializing in industrial minerals. The Red Hill site is dedicated to producing high-purity quartz, and the site houses facilities for Analytical Laboratories and Research & Development.

Practices and Impacts
  • Sibelco monitors the on-site habitats and repairs any issues monthly. The wildlife team cleans out weeds, adds lime, fertilize and replaces plants as needed with the same kind or same blooming time. Employees also check birdhouses and feeders and clean them out in the fall to prepare for the next season. Repairs are made on feeders and bat boxes as needed.
  • The conservation objectives of the pollinator garden are to conserve endangered pollinators, such as the rusty-patched bumble bee, monarch butterfly, red crossbill, yellow-bellied sapsucker and northern long-eared bat. Employees are engaged in planning, monitoring and maintenance.
  • The landscaped wildlife food plot and hunting project comprise two acres. The conservation objectives of this project are to help populations of animals multiply and survive the cold mountain winters. Employees are engaged in meetings and in setting up game cameras.
  • Beginning in 1999, the on-site forestry project makes up 350 acres, with an objective to prioritize biodiversity conservation. A forest tree survey was conducted in 2023.
