The IBM Corporate Headquarters is located in Armonk, New York, about 40 miles north of New York City. The site features an eight-acre grassland consisting of high grasses, goldenrod, asters and a sorghum patch, bordered by deciduous trees including maples, oaks, birches, inkberry bushes and a small apple grove. The objective of the team’s avian project is to provide year-round habitat for the resident and migratory avian population.
Practices and Impacts
- In partnership with Greenwich Audubon Society, in 2007, the team began monitoring birds biannually in the summer and winter. A total of 91 species have been observed to date, including Canada geese, dark-eyed juncos and black-capped chickadees.
- The team installed 10 nesting boxes in the grassland to provide breeding habitat for cavity-nesting birds.
- In partnership with BrightView, the team maintains the grassland through selective mowing to provide cover, breeding and foraging opportunities, and to prevent invasive species encroachment.
- Future plans include installing nest boxes designed to attract eastern bluebirds and planting native species to increase foraging opportunities, especially in the winter months.
